The Impact of Social Support, Perceived Stigma on the Quality of Life among Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infected Persons in Malawi of Africa : Focused on the Mediating Effect of Depression and Self-esteem

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the structural equation model on the quality of life for HIV/AIDS patients in Malawi, Africa.

Methods: Data were collected from 215 HIV/AIDS patients in Malawi through a self-reported questionnaire between March 15, 2013 and January 31, 2014. The data analyzed by SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 19.0 and maximum likelihood minimization function.

Result: The results confirmed that social support, stigma, depression, and self-esteem were factors that directly or indirectly explained the subject¡¯s quality of life. Social support and self-esteem were factors that influenced the HIV/AIDS patient¡¯s quality of life most direct, and also, social support can indirectly affect the quality of life through self-esteem. The results also indicated that perceived stigma could indirectly affect the quality of life through depression and self-esteem.

Conclusion: It is necessary to explore ways to reduce perceived stigma, as well as develop and apply practical systems and measures to increase social support and self-esteem in an approach to improve the quality of life of HIV/AIDS patients.
